Resources

There is so much to see and do in the SCA, it can be very overwhelming to get started. Here are some online resources that can help you as you begin your journey:

Research Tools

  • https://marginalia-search.com/ – This is a search engine deliberately tuned to find “web 1.0” type websites. A lot of interesting references, knowledge bases, and even websites specifically created by SCAdians over the years are very difficult to find with modern search engines, which ignore them because they aren’t flashy. This search engine will help you find those sites.

Fabric

With most brick and mortar fabric stores now closed, it can be very difficult to know where to purchase fabric. These are some options. (For fancier-looking fabrics, thrift store curtains can sometimes be an option.)

Clothing & Accessories

Generally speaking, the SCA encourages its participants to research and make their own garb (costumes) for wear at events. It can be tough to get started, though, so it can be nice to purchase one or two items at the start. Keep in mind, though, that the amount you pay will greatly impact the quality, and nothing fits as well as something custom-made!

Martial Equipment

Make sure to consult with a Marshal before committing to a purchase. It would not be fun to spend money only to find out what you’ve bought isn’t permitted on the field!
